Winter at Edward Kemp Community Garden

After a Summer of extreme heat and lots of rain which meant a bumper crop of apples, tomatoes and chillies, the Edward Kemp Community Garden is now starting to prepare for Winter.

What does Winter mean for the Community Garden? It’s a time for working with nature to prepare the flower and vegetable areas using ‘Black Gold’ (manure) to enrich the soil and allow nature to break down essential nutrients. It is also a time for carrying out many remedial jobs, such as sorting out the compost areas (again). With the help of the Aviva Crowdfunder the Garden now has some new compost bays and the Students from the University of Liverpool have been and continuing to helping them with this work.

During the Summer they managed to refurbish their natural pond area, and now it is looking very full and healthy – thanks again to the volunteers and friends who carried out the work! The pond supports a wide variety of wildlife which were removed into a holding area while they carried out the work.

They have started planting some trees and volunteers have prepared an area for planting perennials which, once they are established, will be planted out into the Park.

Plot holders have increased and many have been very active including a new group from the Wirral Youth Justice Service. Journeymen are very active in the Garden and the brothers from the Mosque have grown some very different crops this year. In the Summer they provided a Summer Feast to celebrate the end of Ramadan which was amazing.
