How to get here

Birkenhead Park is at the heart of the town. If walking from Hamilton Square or Birkenhead Priory, it will take you around half an hour to reach us. If you’re visiting the nearby Williamson Art Gallery, you can be here in under ten minutes.

There are many entrance gates on all sides of the park. If it’s your first visit to the People’s Garden, we recommend that you come in through the Grand Entrance (on the corner of Park Road North and Park Road East) for the ultimate impact!

Birkenhead Park is stop-off point for several cycling routes around the Wirral, including those that follow the Wirral Way coastal path between New Brighton and West Kirby.

One of the most popular cycling routes is the aptly-named Birkenhead Park loop. This 17-mile route takes in much of North Wirral, including Meols, Greasby, Upton, Leasowe, Wallasey and, of course, Birkenhead. The route takes you right through the park, which offers the perfect excuse to stop off at the cafe for a much-needed cup of tea.

The park offers plenty of space for cycling with its wide outer path (Park Drive), being a smoothly-asphalted road that takes you around the perimeter of the park. You can easily take your bike with you on Merseyrail trains by using the appropriate carriage, so it’s easy to make it here on your bike, even if you live much further away.

Birkenhead Park train station is a 5-minute walk from the park itself and easily-accessible on Merseyrail’s Wirral Line. Please note that since summer 2022 the station is equipped with a wheelchair accessible elevator.

Trains travelling from West Kirby and New Brighton to Birkenhead Hamilton Square (and vice versa) all stop at Birkenhead Park station. Not only is it convenient for visiting the park, but it makes exploring the rest of the Wirral so simple. Simply hop on at Birkenhead Park station and you can be in Liverpool City Centre, West Kirby, New Brighton, Port Sunlight, and more, within a few minutes.

Please note: There is currently no vehicular access to Birkenhead Park, and our vehicle gates remain closed to all vehicles with exception of emergency services, maintenance vehicles, and deliveries. Parking is currently available on the park’s surrounding roads (e.g. Ashville Road, Cavendish Road, Park Road North, Park Road East, Park Road South and Park Road West). Occasionally, Ashville Road is closed to vehicles during large events.
